Sleater-Kinney is a Northwest "riot grrl" band that has been for years critically acclaimed and commercially ignored. At the moment the band is on "inedfinate hiatus", with no tours or recording planned for the future, so they may or may not be finished as a band. I have nearly all of their cds, and they are uneven in quality, but there are usually two or three tracks per cd that just grab me in a big way. As a punk band they are all about energy and emotion rather than great vocals and musicianship, but they score big on emotion-charged lyrics and passionate delivery.
One interesting thing about the band is their makeup -- drums and two guitars, but no bass. Because of how they tune and play their instruments, it works pretty well. ^_^
Probably Sleater-Kinney's best two cds were their last two, One Beat and The Woods. Prisstina is from the former. It may not be the best song on the cd and certainly isn't the one with the biggest lyrical or emotional punch, but I happen to like it a lot. But more than that, it has a theremin. Today's Open Source, which I'm listening to right now on KUOW NPR, is all about the theramin. For that reason, I had to make my favorite rock song with a theramin played in it the song of the day.
Prisstina is a simple song about a brainy girl who spends all her time studying instead of partying... until the lure of lurid rock 'n' roll finally catches her ear.
Call her your Prisstina,
Would you put her under glass?
Would you like to study?
'Cause she's got such perfect class
Oh, you want to tempt her
With your d irty rock 'n' roll
Call her your Prisstina
She's such a pretty girl
She went on to study Ivy-league
and to rack up points for her degree
While the other girls fondled their dates,
She fooled around with her bunsen plate
But one night she was walking around
She passed a club with the music so loud
She wondered what it would be like
To stay out with a co-ed all night
The party's already started and the music's drifting in
Don't wait on your fairy godmother she's late on her way to you
Should you trust that old Prince Charming,
You know he never did you any good
But have yourself a ball, Prisstina,
Do all the things I would!
I can't point you to a place on the web where you can hear this song (I may be one of the few who ranks it among their favorite Sleater-Kinney tracks) but here are some other videos from the band: Jumpers, Entertain, and Modern Girl all taken from The Woods.
I postdated my entries for Saturday and Sunday since I wrote them Sunday and Monday. I want to maintain a record of having done a song of the day every single day since I've started. But having post-dated them, I see that they don't show up on my "friends" view, only when I look at my journal entries only. Not that I really expect that many people are reading these but, just FYI.
