Today's Song: Never Did No Wanderin' by The New Main Street Singers
Never Did No Wanderin' comes, of course, from A Mighty Wind, a hilarious movie done by the same folks responsible for Waiting For Guffman, Best in Show and to a certain extent This Is Spinal Tap. Frankly I'm amazed that I can even link to a web site for the movie, but look! I can!
This song is, of course, a parody of the hundreds of folk songs about wandering the wide world. The popular folk theme is turned on its head as the singer describes all of the ways that he didn't travel and all of the things he never saw. As usual, the lyrics include some head-scratching lines and mismatched images -- the opening lines amply demonstrate this:
My mother was the cold North wind,
My father was the son,
Of A railroad man from west of Hell
Where the trains don't even run.
Naturally I think you should own the whole soundtrack, if you're at all inclined to listen to fake folk music -- and let's face it, this is the best cd of fake folk music ever assembled! There's also a version of this song by the Folksmen, but I'm particularly taken by the complex vocal arrangements of the version by the New Main Street Singers. Next surprise: I can even link to a youtube video of this song. Woo! I was hoping that I could!
And just for fun, here's a link to Mitch and Mickey singing A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow, which was not only supposed to be their biggest hit, but was nominated for an Academy Award for best song in real life! In fact, they performed the song live at the 76th Academy Awards... and and I can link that performance as well. ^_^
And in the grand tradition of Youtube... Amateur Fan doing a cover tribute of the song... nicely done too. On autoharp of course. ^_^
