Today's Guest Song of the Day: Buy U A Drank by T-Pain

When asked C what his favorite song was, my coworker first said something like, "You've Lost that Loving Feeling by Michael Jackson and Tupac." It's hard to get a straight answer out of him. Afterwards he said that he couldn't remember the song title or the artist, then said it was "Shawtee" by T-Pain. As it actually turned out, "Shawty" (correct spelling, if you can call it that) is by a rapper called Plies, but features hip-hop/rap artist T-Pain. It's also not to be found anywhere on iTunes, although I did learn that "Shawty" is a very popular song title or word in a song title for rap singers... there were several dozen very different songs that came up when I searched just on that name.

In the meantime, T-Pain's most recent single released this Spring is Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin') which C also said he liked a lot, so that's my song of the day.

T-Pain was born Faheem Najim to Muslim parents in Tallahassee, Florida. Given that his music is often about strippers, drinking, sex, and all the familiar hip hop topics, I kind of wonder if his parents aren't horrified at what their good little Muslim boy has become. ^_^ The name stands for Teddy Pain, or Tallahassee Pain, or just Tally Pain, depending on his mood I guess.

His music isn't hard core rap or even hip hop really (I was prepared for that when I asked C to name a song), it's more r&b than anything, although with a rougher, harder edge to it than typically smooth r&b. Not the stuff I'd normally listen to but actually it's a very listenable song. I can see that if I were more into hip hop then this would be an artist to follow. But of course, the song is all about picking up a girl in a bar, tossing your fame and wealth about, and taking her back to your crib for an hour or two of sex. So I'd say the music is more interesting or original than the subject matter, which seems pretty typical of hip hop.

Then again, I listen to fantasy power metal, so what do I know about original?
