Today's Song: Counting the Days by Collective Soul


I love Collective Soul and I picked up all of their cds as they came out in the 90's, even if some were not quite as great as others. Really, their second cd is still probably their best.

They got dropped from their label and took a few years off, then came back on an independent label with the cd Youth. I wasn't really following them at the time, so I didn't pick it up right away, and when I finally got it last year I let it lay around a while before really listening to it. You know, when you have as many cds as I have sometimes that happens. ^_^

I've been listening to it for the last couple of weeks and it's frankly awesome. They still pretty much sound like they always have, but it's a looser sound, more relaxed, and in a strange way more of a glam rock sound than their early stuff. I mean, their sound has always borrowed from older classic rock, but a reviewer I read noted the glam elements on this disc, and when I listened for them I could hear them very clearly on certain songs. Ed Rolland and company have been listening to Ziggy Stardust, or something like that.

Anyway my favorite track from this cd so far is Counting the Days, but Better Now is also very good. Really it's on of their better cds, a lot of good tracks on this one. And it came out in 2004 so it's high time they released something new!

Oh and here it is again, a live acoustic version. Very nice! Actually I own an acoustic cover of this song, on their all-acoustic cd From the Ground Up. I picked that up about the same time as Youth, and I haven't listened to it very much yet.
