Today's Song: Come Together by Trouble
I had a weird day. Played some City of Heroes, got my stuff together, drove up to Fry's and bought a 1 gig stick of memory for my new laptop. Came home, installed it, and almost instantly I got a severe headache and also started feeling kind of sick to my stomach, even though I hadn't really eaten that much since breakfast. Anyway I laid down and slept for several hours and felt much better, but it was already 9 pm by the time I got up.
In the meantime I forgot to do my song of the day... so I backdated an entry.
I've been listening to the stuff I picked up on Saturday -- all of it good btw. I went to Silver Platters and bought one new cd: In Between Evolution by the Tragically Hip, and two cds from their bargain bin: The Definitive Act by Tsunami Bomb and Uncle Anesthesia by Screaming Trees. Then I went over to Half Price Books, hoping to pick up one of the Rush or R.E.M. cds that I don't have yet, or an older Death Cab For Cutie, or maybe (if I was really lucky) the newest release from Idlewild. But you never know what you'll find at a used music/book store. I found none of what I thought I'd find, and actually they had a used copy of the Tragically Hip cd I'd just bought new. What I did find, and buy, was the self-titled fourth cd by Chicago's psychadelic doom white metal band Trouble. It's considered their best release, but I'd never listened to it before.
As it turns out this is out of print and can't be bought on Amazon for less than $45.00. I got it for $4.95. ^_^ I've always liked Trouble, but I only had their first two releases on album and then the second one again on cd. I need to pick up their other stuff.
You can't find any of their stuff on iTunes, but they have some songs as free downloads on their website, at this link. In particular they have a nice ultra-heavy cover of Come Together by the Beatles. That ought to be listenable even by people who wouldn't otherwise like Trouble's slow, heavy riffing metal sound. Highly reccomended!
They have a myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/troublechicago
Videos: Black Shapes of Doom (from the self-titled 4th cd that I just picked up). Set to a very odd old cartoon.
Psychotic Reaction (also from the cd I just picked up)
At the End of My Daze (also from the cd I just picked up)
R.I.P. (yes, this is ALSO from the cd I just picked up. I know it's considered their best release, but I had no idea I'd find so many videos from it!)
And because I can't resist... Psalm 9 from their first cd. After all if you're still checking these links out this far down, you must actually like this stuff. ^_^ Heavy, slow, doom metal with Christian-themed lyrics. Emphasis on the HEAVY.
Trouble is often labelled a Christian or White Metal band. Like King's X, they were never a band that set out to save people's souls, but some of the members considered themselves Christian and they liked to write about positive spiritual themes, even though their music was largely based on the dark gloom metal sound of Black Sabbath. They really didn't like the Christian metal label at all. However, lead guitarist Bruce Franklin (one of the Christians in the band) has gone on to work with Doug Pinnick of King's X in a side project called Supershine (and frankly I like Doug's vocals better than those of Trouble vocalist Eric Wagner, who is best described as an acquired taste). Bruce Franklin also was a guest guitarist on Where Moth And Rust Destroy by Tourniquet, another great heavy metal band with Christian leanings.
