Miss Treason is dead!

My 7 cd set of Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett on cd arrived three days ago. I've been listening to it at work, only I don't really get to put my headphones on and ignore everything around me until 6 pm or so. Thus, after two days I'm still not quite all the way through disc 3. It's sad when I have to turn off the player and go home. Both nights I stuck the disc in my car's cd player and listened on the way home, even though my commute is all of 8 minutes. Tonight I sat in the car for another 10 minutes or so, until Miss Treason was dead and Death had shown up and they'd gone off together. Both nights I've been very tempted to listen to them inside my apartment, but of course I bought them to listen to at work, and anyway the sooner I finish the sooner I'll be disappointed that it's over and desperate to buy another one, but I certainly can't afford to buy them all at once. So I must set limits.

The reader is awesome in his performance. He's better than [livejournal.com profile] chuck_melville at voices, and that's saying quite a lot. I will certainly have to pick up more of these books on cd, when I can afford to, and lend this cd collection to everyone I can. [livejournal.com profile] miertam already has it, and I believe that [livejournal.com profile] typographer had already mentioned that [livejournal.com profile] jwyldragon and [livejournal.com profile] pencil_rain were also already big fans of these cds, but anyone who hasn't heard these yet really needs to borrow my cd set, as soon as I'm done with it. Which won't take me long. ^_^

Work is about to get more interesting. I was told a few weeks ago that they might be hiring another rate clerk. After talking to us, they realized that if they rebid all of the rate clerk positions, I might rather take a morning position than a night position, and that was a bit of a problem because I'd want as late a start as possible. I have seniority over everyone but J the night manager, so I get what I want. C would want the next latest daytime start, and he'd get that, and that would leave the newest rate clerk B to take the early start. They really want at least one person starting at 6 am or 6:30 am. Problem being, B was actually hired to start that early and because of her situation with her young son and when she has to take him to daycare, she wasn't able to do it. If she was forced into that time slot, she'd probably just quit, and we like her and don't want her to quit.

Their solution was to not rebid all of the rate clerk positions, but to just put up a new morning rate clerk position bid sheet for a 6:30 am to 3 pm time slot. They also told me that they'd be moving my time slot back to a 2:30 pm start, which would mean getting off at 11 pm instead of 9 pm. Really, they don't even need someone starting that early in the afternoon, they were probably doing that just to accomodate me. But I decided that I didn't really want to go back to working later in the night, even only to 11 pm. So I bid for the morning position.

I have seniority. What I want, I get. That means that I'll soon be starting work at 6:30 am and getting off at 3 pm. I can't say I want to be starting work at 6:30 am, but I prefer that over working until 11 pm at night. I might even be able to have a social life again, or something. At least see a movie once in a while.

J the night manager was very worried about me taking this position. He'll miss me, of course, but he was in trouble either way because one of the night billers has rating experience and wants to get back into rating, so if I didn't move to mornings she was likely to. He was going to lose one of us either way. But no, he just seemed worried about me starting that early, as if it were completely unimaginable that anyone could ever get up that early. He's been working nights longer than I have so I guess the idea of a 6:30 am start really bothered him.

J the day manager was very happy though, because he likes me, and trusts me, and I already know the job and don't need to be trained. His problem is solved.

Anyway, I'm a creature of habit and I don't like change, but change is generally a good thing. You don't want to get stuck in a rut. I was nervous about moving from strictly nights to my current half day/half night schedule, but I've liked that quite a bit. If I had my way, I'd just keep my current schedule. So I didn't worry about the early start too much. It'll be a big change, but change is good.

One problem is that I will no longer get to put my headphones on and just listen to something while I bill. That was very calming after the daytime mess of working while the phones are constantly ringing and iterrupting you. Ah well! I guess when that happens I'll have to listen to my Terry Pratchett books at home after all!
