So for the last three work days (Friday, Monday and Tuesday) I've been working a 10:30am to 7:00pm schedule. This was just temporary while one of the other day clerks was on vacation, but it was a small taste of what is to come when my 6:30am to 3:00pm schedule starts. As to that, I'm not sure exactly when that's going to happen. The bid for my evening rate clerk position went up Monday, and was promptly signed by the night billing clerk who has a lot of rating/auditing type of experience. I don't think she was a true rate clerk before, but she knows enough that they can easily give her the job. Legally they have to post the job internally for three days though, union rules. You just never know if someone with more experience and seniority might want a position. They didn't, for example, actually know I wanted to work days when they posted the last job.

But they also posted the night billing clerk position yesterday, which is a pretty sure sign that they're planning to hire the current billing clerk as their new night rate clerk.

Anyway, over the weekend [livejournal.com profile] kehf and [livejournal.com profile] dehd and son came down and took away my extra computer desk, and that left a hole in my computer room that was begging for a bookshelf. So given that last night was my the last of my "get off at 7pm" nights for this week, I took the opportunity to run up to Ikea and buy a billy bookshelf. I came home and immediately assembled it. I told myself I was going to be very careful and make sure I did it right, but I damaged part of the thin backing material by trying to lift it from the wrong point (it cracked a bit) and then when I got it all assembled, I realized that I hadn't used a lot of the wooden pegs -- the anchoring shelves on the top, bottom, and center are held on by screws and cams, but they're also supposed to be held on by wooden pegs. It's still quite sturdy (my computer desk, for example, is not an Ikea desk but similar, and only has screws and cams to hold it together). Still, it would be more sturdy if it were put together right. I didn't want to take it apart so I just stood it up and put stuff on it, but I probably really should take it apart and fix it. The only tricky part of doing that would be all the little nails holding the backing panel on.

Ah well. It otherwise looks quite nice and might very well allow me to organize my computer room better.

Another aspect of working early is that I have less time to listen to NRP with my headphones on, and I also don't get to hear all of my favorite shows (one of which was no longer being broadcast on a weekday evening anyway). When I got in the car on Monday and turned on the radio, there was actually some kind of call-in show that I had no interest in whatsoever. "What's this?" I thought. "This isn't NPR!" Well, it was NPR of course, just a time slot I wasn't used to hearing, or wanted to hear.

So this lead me to finally decide to start downloading podcasts for my iPod. And actually, this is very easy to do. I went to iTunes and subscribed to a handful of my favorite shows via podcast -- and I was somewhat surprised to realize most of them are actually the product of PRI. I knew a couple were, but I hadn't realized almost all of them were. (I should add that this all costs nothing, of course.)

I subscribed to NPR's All Songs Considered. I don't really want to grab podcasts of the news, since I don't always listen to the news and I may not listen to a podcast for several days, but I do like hearing about new music. I subscribed to PRI's Living On Earth, To The Best of Our Knowledge, and This American Life (of course). I also subscribed to Radio Lab, which turned out to be neither NPR nor PRI, but a product of WNYC, New York Public Radio. It's a cool show though, KUOW has been playing it on Friday evenings in place of This American Life. Not that anything can replace This American Life, but still, it's good.

That's it for the moment. There are other shows that I might want to subscribe to, but those are the ones I find most interesting and entertaining.

In other news, some idiot somewhere signed me up to their e-mail list. I think it has something to do with a record I recently purchased, because it seems to be a list about music or something. But they only sent out one post about some concert in the New York area, and since that post (several days ago now) I have been receiving dozens of "unsubscribe" messages, "please remove me from your list" messages, "I didn't ask to be put on your list, please stop sending me messages now!" messages. I'm in the same boat, I didn't ask to be put on this list and I don't want to be on it, but after following the links to the list web page and trying very hard to unsubscribe, I was unable to do so. There's a big button you click to unsubscribe but the web page bogged down completely at that point and failed to do anything -- or maybe it wants me to log in first, but I don't feel I should have to ask for a password to a list I never asked to be a part of, so that I can log in to a web page I want nothing to do with, just so I can unsubscribe.

I've also determined that my replies to messages sent to me via this list go directly to the sender and not the list. I haven't actually figured out yet how anyone is sending messages to the list, because my attempts to do so all failed. So I've resorted to saving the original post (from the owner of the list, presumably) and sending e-mails demanding to be taken off the list immediately directly to him. And making each demand more angry and more strident. If he's going to waste my time like this, then I'm going to waste his time too, and call him names and use Language and whatever else I can think of to get his attention and force him to actually do something about all of the people trapped on his stupid e-mail list.
