miko2PRI's To The Best of Our Knowledge is a fun show. Not my favorite show on KUOW, but well worth listening to. It was one of the first shows I subscribed to when I decided to download some podcasts for my iPod.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that their hour-long show is only 20 minutes per podcast. What's worse, they include teasers for the other stories in that show segment... "coming up later in the hour..." but then they just end after the first 20 minute segment. They advise you to go to their website to download the full broadcast. Well, okay, I can do that, but why the !@#$*&* can't I get the full broadcast through iTunes? It seems like a simple thing that many other NPR and PRI shows manage to accomplish.
So I go to their website, and guess what? You can't just download the full broadcast. Apparently you can listen to it streaming from your computer if you have Real Player installed, which I don't, because Real Player is a program as evil as many of Microsoft's own native-to-windows programs (see: Internet Explorer, Outlook, et al). Actually I prefer Windows Media Player over Real Player. But the point is that I apparently can't download a full hour of this show and walk around listening to it on my iPod (or other mp3 playing device). LAME!
On the flip side, while trying to figure out what other Podcasts I might want to subscribe to, I realized that there are a lot of music-related ones. I had already subscribed to NPR's All Songs Considered, and there was also NPR's Music (which I think is similar). But there are song-of-the-day podcasts that give you just one song every day to consider. Sort of like my song-of-the-day blog posts, only this is all free music (some come with a short ad). I signed up for Indiefeed: Alternative/Modern Rock, Indiefeed: Indie Pop Music, KEXP Song of the Day, and just because I know it'll be well worth listening to, They Might Be Giants Podcast.
All free! ^_^
