The Gits were one of the early 1990's Seattle bands that I knew a lot about, but had never actually listened to until picking up that EMP Seattle music compilation a few weeks ago. Their entry on the compilation is Another Shot of Whiskey, which is not really their best-known song (that would be Second Skin) but is a fine Seattle punk rock song nonetheless. I've had it stuck in my head for the last few days, even though I haven't listened to it during that time.
Their name was originally the Snivvelling Little Rat Faced Gits, a reference to a Monty Python skit. They also had a song named Spear and Magic Helmet, so that probably gives you a taste of their sense of humor.
The history of the Gits is, of course, that they were on the verge of breaking out onto the national stage when Mia Zapata was brutally raped and murdered. The case went cold for many years before a dna match helped them arrest and convict the man who murdered her. Her death affected the Seattle and punk rock communities greatly. Seattle-based 7 Year Bitch did a song about her, and Joan Jett recorded a song with Kathleen Hanna from Bikini Kill about Mia's murder, with an appeal to anyone who might have clues to call the police. Later Joan Jett toured with the remaining members of The Gits as "Evil Stig" (Gits Live spelled backwards) and they even released a cd. All profits went to the investigation into her murder.
Recently they've put out a documentary about the band and it's full and complete story, simply called "The Gits". Despite how little of it there is, their music remains popular today.
Can't find a link to this song in particular, but here's some other stuff:
