Today's Song: Church of the Holy Spook by Shane MacGowan and the Popes

Shane MacGowan is one of those people who probably should have died quite a while ago, but wonder of wonders, he's still around. He's also a bit like Bob Dylan in that he has a horrible singing voice but he makes it work anyway and he's a wonderful songwriter. For many years he was the frontman with The Pogues and after that he formed a new band called the Popes. Both the Pogues and the Popes have made albums without Shane, and they are consistently less interesting than the stuff they've done with Shane.

Church of the Holy Spook is my favorite track from Shane's first album with the Popes, The Snake. I'm kind of surprised that I can't find a link to them performing it. Anyway, it's Shane asserting, in a way that only he could manage, his quite irreverent ties to the religion of his fore-bearers. And it rocks.
