Today's Song: Climbing the Walls by They Might Be Giants (and generally what I did on the 4th)

I was thinking that I should do a patriotic song for the 4th of July, but the only patriotic American song that really matters to me is Stars and Stripes Forever, which is a great tune and everyone should own at least one good version of it and listen to it at least once a year, on 7/4, if not any other time of the year. It's on my iPod now, two version actually, one of them by the current incarnation of John Phillip Sousa's own band.

I also bought an American flag hair scrunchie a couple of weeks ago and wore it yesterday and today. I wore a nice tee shirt with the American flag on it yesterday, but today I just wore my new Mountain fairy shirt, which I ordered two months ago and just arrived in the mail on the 3rd. Very slow service. I was quite happy to see that the shirt is more purple than I had expected. It's kind of a purple-wine color, where I had expected it to be more of a red. I like it.

I got up today and had a lot of plans. I played City of Heroes for a couple of hours, and then got a call from Tom, letting me know he was heading up from Olympia and would be dropping by soon. I took a 40 minute walk and a shower and he arrived just as I got out. We headed up to Whole Foods Grocery, where we bought a few things, then down to Fry's. Tom bought several anime DVDs. I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy anything, but I came across Season 2 volume 1 of the Ah! My Goddess television series, which I had no idea was already coming out, and I HAD TO HAVE IT IMMEDIATELY! I also found volume one of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya, and I HAD TO HAVE THAT IMMEDIATELY too.

I also found an anime based on Paradise Kiss, with three volumes out. This was very nearly a must get immediately thing as well, but Tom listened to me say why it was such a cool series and he decided to buy it himself. Later at my place we watched Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl (he liked it), Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya (he liked it too) and some of Paradise Kiss (he liked this as well). Great stuff all! (I shall have to pick up ParaKiss at some point).

[livejournal.com profile] typographer will be very jealous to hear this next bit. While looking around for internet computer cams (Tom is interested in one), I decided to look at keyboards. One of the nice things about my new laptop is that I can play City of Heroes on it, but using the laptop keyboard is a pain. I was wondering if getting a real keyboard might be an idea, or if they had one particularly suited to gaming. I have to admit that nearly every keyboard I've ever owned has been a cheapo brand one; I've never felt the need to get something better.

I looked at some of the backlit keyboards. They looked cool. One of them included laser-etched letters in the keys, so that while the keyboard itself is made of opaque black plastic, it's not just backlit but the letters on the keys light up as well. This looked VERY cool. And it came with three color settings: blue, red, and purple.

Tom said that it was a tough choice between this keyboard and a couple of the others. I said: No it's not, this one is purple.

It's a usb keyboard and plugs into my laptop easily. I lurv it.

Anyway, back to my song of the day. Several bands I like have brand new cds coming out or that have just come out. The White Stripes have a new cd out, Icky Thump, that is reportedly one of their best. I've already ordered it. The Smashing Pumpkins have reformed (well, Billy Corrigan and the drummer anyway -- it doesn't matter, it's Corrigan and it's the Smashing Pumpkins name and sound, I'm sold) and their new cd is due out very soon. I can't buy this yet but I downloaded the song Doomsday Clock from iTunes and I lurv it. And They Might Be Giants have a new cd out that is reportedly one of their best ever, perhaps their best since Flood. I was thinking of picking this up as a birthday present to myself, but instead I got the purple backlit keyboard. (Anyway, as it turns out it may be downloadable on iTunes but it doesn't hit stores until July 10th.) But I did download from iTunes the song Climbing the Walls, and I can reccomend it to anyone who likes They Might Be Giants, particularly if you're a big fan of their earlier work on Flood and Apollo 18.
