Today's Song: The Tower by Avantasia
Avantasia is not really a band, but a symphonic metal project created by Tobias Sammet, vocalist for power metal band Edguy. The name Avantasia is a portmanteau of the words "avalon" and "fantasia". In any case, in the past I've accused certain symphonic/operatic power metal bands of wanting to be Queen, but Avantasia is perhaps where the idea of welding Bohemian Rhapsody to power metal is most fully realized. The project released two cds, "The Metal Opera Part 1" and, of course, "Part 2". This tells the tale of a Dominican monk named Gabriel, set in the early 17th century. I guess in technical terms this is not a full-fledged opera, but a collection of songs which tell different parts of the overall plot -- but each character does indeed have his or her own singer.
In any case, it's pretty much like I said -- Bohemian Opera set to power metal, for two full cds.
I don't own these cds but I did download The Tower a few months ago and have listened to it quite a bit. It's a nice song, as far as symphonic operatic power metal goes.
