Today's Song: Spill Blood On Fire by Heavenly
Last year I picked up Dust To Dust by French power metal band Heavenly, and fell in love with it. It's an epic tale of a man who becomes a vampire and eventually fights and kills his master in order to free his own soul... and it's done in a very elaborate progressive power metal that owes a lot to Queen. Lead vocalist Ben Sotto clearly doesn't have Freddy Mercury's range, and it took me a while to get used to his vocals (like some metal vocalists of this sort, he is clearly singing out of his normal range a lot of time), and also the lyrics in some places are a bit lacking, given that this is a French band writing in English that's understandable -- yet the album is quite ambitious in what it attempts to do, and it succeeds in nearly all of it. The songs really are epic, powerful, and at times beautiful as well.
I picked up their more recent cd Virus this Spring, and have listened to it off and on. Mostly I've had on my iPod the first track, The Dark Memories, which I downloaded from iTunes before I got the cd. But once again the whole cd is worth listening to. I drove up to Seattle yesterday and went several places, and the whole time I was listening to this cd. The second track, Spill Blood on Fire, in particular got stuck in my head.
Lucky for me there's a video on Youtube for this song. ^_^
