Today's Song: Salty Dog by Flogging Molly
I can't believe I haven't featured Flogging Molly as my song of the day before now. Flogging Molly is an American band that plays Irish folk/punk rock. They are in many ways descended from the likes of the Pogues, but Flogging Molly leans much more to hard rock and guitar punk. All of their music is original -- they rarely do covers, and Dave King is a fantastic song writer. This is Irish reel & roll at it's best.
Sing with me:
Anarchy! The scourge of every sea!
The Antichrist aboard a rig, with us yer cutthroat thieves!
The ship went down, we all near drowned,
You stood there on the deck,
'Till the Spanish came and flogged yer arse,
And dragged you from the wreck.
They threw a rope around your neck
To watch you dance the jig of death
They left you for the starving crows
Hovering like hungry whores
One flew down, plucked out yer eye
The other he had in his sights
You snarled at him, said, 'Leave me be,
I need the bugger so I can see!"
A finer pirate song does not exist, although I am also quite fond of Tempest's Captain Ward and Phoenyx's Yo Ho! (a Heather Alexander tune that was covered by her band Uffington Horse and also performed by her solo). The video link for this song is set to scenes from Pirates of the Carribean, which is absolutely perfect!
