Today's Song: Seven Seas by Vision of Atlantis

A lot of bands get described as "like Nightwish" and it's never actually true. Nightwish is almost a genre unto itself. That said, I always felt that Epica came the closest to doing what Nightwish does, or sometimes Within Temptation on certain songs.

Eh, scratch that idea. Visions of Atlantis is the closest thing to Nightwish I've heard. They're not quite as good, but they've certainly got many of the same elements -- power metal, symphonic instrumentation, operatic female vocals coupled with non-growly male vocals. Really these days they almost sound more like Nightwish than Nightwish does anymore. ^_^

It's not true on every song, but... well, judge for yourself.

Visions of Atlantis - Seven Seas

This song is from their new album that I picked up yesterday. It was payday and i was in the mood to buy something, but I wasn't sure what. What I really wanted was the new Nightwish cd, but I'd ordered it from Amazon and it hadn't arrived yet. So I wandered around Silver Platters trying to remember stuff I was intersted in and then seeing if they had it (they often didn't). There was one song that I'd downloaded recently that I couldn't remember, so I went out to the car and got my iPod. Oh yeah! Visions of Atlantis! Not only exactly what I wanted, but something they were almost guaranteed to have!

(Which was true in more ways than one -- as it turned out, the band was in town just two weeks ago opening up for Epica. Hmm, that would have been a good concert to catch.)

Anyway I also recalled the other band I wanted to pick up -- Snow Patrol. So of course, I bought both and when I got home my Nightwish cd had finally arrived. Ah, lots of great music to listen to!
