Today's Song: Let's Get It Started by Tufts Beelzebubs

I decided that since I had so many cds picked up in the last two months that I haven't listened to, I need to make my song of the day come from one of those cds every day until I've listened to them all. There were over 40 so that should keep me busy for a while. ^_^

So... I think this was the cd I got from Sheryl. It's the Best of College Acapella 2006. To be honest, this is a cd I would never have picked up on my own, except maybe if I found it in a $2 bin at Half Price Books... but it's really, really good. BOCA (Varsity Vocals) takes submissions from college acapella groups around the country every year and produces a cd of the best submissions, which is what you have here. It kind of made me want to buy some of the others... but that would be a big investment in music that I might not listen to that much. But according to the reviews on iTunes (it is on iTunes), this is one of the best of the series anyway.

I like a lot of the tracks on this cd, and my only complaint is that many of the covers try too hard to sound exactly like the original -- the cover of Renegade nails the Styx vocals quite well, and the cover of Crazy Train nails Ozzy's vocals pretty well too -- I would have liked to see more creative interpretations. I mean, it's cool that you can reproduce a heavy metal song in all-acapella and make it sound a lot like the original -- but then, it's not all that original is it?

Anyway this cover suffers from the same disease but the song by the Black Eyed Peas is quite infectious and I really like the acapella version. It's the first track on the cd, and makes a great opener.
