Today's Song: Falling Snow by Agalloch
I've more or less been calling Portland, Oregon's Agalloch a melodic death metal band but I've been told that they have nothing much in common with death metal, apart from the raspy vocals I suppose. And I guess this is true -- Agalloch borrows a bit from black and doom metal, but also from folk and ambient music and other sources. They're described by Wikipedia as "an American dark metal band". What they produce is folk-influenced metal with a great deal of melody and a great deal of atmosphere.
I've had the song Falling Snow on my iPod for a few months now and it's a nice song -- in a harsh, bleak sort of way. Critics like to draw parallels between the band's music and the dark, overcast, fog-shrouded landscape of the Northwest. Eh, I suppose it works. ^_^
Fans on Last.fm are attempting to get this band tagged "elk influenced nature metal". :D
