Today's Song: Paris Cat by Cold Fairyland

Cold Fairyland is a band from Shanghai, China. They describe their music as "Progressive/Ambient/Gothic" and list as influences Pink Floyd, Portishead, Dead Can Dance, Radiohead, and Chinese artist Dou Wei. Wikipedia lists early Genesis, Jethro Tull, and another Chinese artist, Wong Faye, as other influences and says, "Their style combines Eastern melodies and rhythms with Western symphonic rock and classical music. The band has two sides; classical and rock, whichallows them to play in concert halls as well as in rock clubs."

Suffice it to say, that was enough to get me interested in the band, and I downloaded the track Mosul to listen to. I wasn't disappointed. This is a progressive/symphonic rock band with Chinese folk influences -- very cool stuff!

Despite the Western-seeming name this is just an English translation of their Chinese name, which is taken from the Chinese translation of a novel (one of the band founder's favorites) by Japanese author Haruki Murakami.

The first song of theirs that I downloaded was The Moon at the Fortified Pass, mostly because it was the most-downloaded track on iTunes and it has such a nice Chinese/fantasy sounding title. It's a good song but I don't find any videos of it on Youtube nor is it on their myspace page (linked above). They do have some nice videos on Youtube though, and I was hooked on this dreamy song (apparently) about a French kitten. ^_^
