Today's Song: I Don't Wanna by The Call

A lot of bands get described as "criminally overlooked", bands that were supposed to be brilliant but never had the success they deserved. I listen to a lot of bands like that. King's X is such a band. So is Sleater- Kinney.

However, The Call seems to fit that label even more than most. Here's a band that has had several minor hits -- maybe even songs you're familiar with. The Walls Came Down was their first hit. Later they had minor hits with I Still Believe and Everywhere I Go and, of course, their biggest hit with Let the Day Begin (warning: LOUD VIDEO). Al Gore used that song as the theme song for his Presidential campaign.

This is a band that Peter Gabriel called "the future of American rock" and was frequently compared to U2 or called "the American U2". However, their first three cds have never been available on cd. (The best we have is "The Best of the Mercury Years" which leaves out a few of my favorite songs.) After breaking away from Mercury they released two of their best cds, Reconciled and Into the Woods, but to my knowledge only Reconciled is still in print and even later cds Let the Day Begin and Red Moon seem to be out of print. As a big fan of the group, "best of' collections simply aren't good enough for me. ^_^

I found Into the Woods at Half Price Books a week ago. I had never actually picked that one up before, don't know why. Just a couple of listens confirmed what I already knew: this is a great cd, possibly their best. And yet, you can't find any cds of even the best songs from it on Youtube, and only 1 track is available from iTunes via one of their "best of" collections. I like In the River and It Could Have Been Me more, but I Don't Wanna is still a very good song by a very good band.

I discovered while ripping this cd to put some songs on my iPod that I apparently don't even own Reconciled by The Call, although I could have sworn t hat I did. Well, it's very cheap used, so I ordered a copy.
