Today's Song: Violet Blue by Chagall Guevara

One of the comments for one of The Call videos said that the person saw them on tour with Chagall Guevara.

Chagall Guevara was a strange band. Formed by well-known members of Contemporary Christian Music (solo singer Steve Taylor, guitarist Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols (from the Phil Keaggy band), bassist Wade Jaynes and drummer Mike Mead), this was a sort of Christian music "super-group" which set out to be a regular, non-CCM rock band -- a band that didn't proselytize or identify itself as a Christian band, although the members happened to be Christian.

Their name was a combination of the names of Marc Chagall and Che Guevara, meaning "revolutionary artist". The band had a lot of talent, but after one very good cd and some odd singles (they appeared on the soundtrack for Pump Up the Volume for example, and a tribute cd for Mark Heard), the band started work on their second cd and then broke up. I think I read once in a Steve Taylor interview that the band had too many big egos, too many leaders and at every turn they had trouble all agreeing on the same thing. They never really achieved their goal of separating themselves from the CCM market either.

Anyway, they were an interesting band. The tracks recorded for their second cd, as well as live recorded material, remain unreleased. You also can't find much about them on Youtube -- only this video, and the song they did for the Mark Heard tribute.
