I listened to the cd Strange Little Girls by Tori Amos today at work. This is one of the cds on my list of ones I got this Fall/Winter that I needed to listen to more. It's a collection of cover tunes, including songs like I Don't Like Mondays (originally by the Boomtown Rats), Enjoy the Silence (originally by Depeche Mode) and Happiness is a Warm Gun (originally by the Beatles). The cd included some extremes -- she does an electronica version of Neil Young's Heart of Gold, and she tackles covers by rap artist Eminem ('97 Bonnie & Clyde) and thrash metal band Slayer (Reigning in Blood).
Despite being all covers, the cd is also a concept album. Every song was written by a man and then reinterpreted by Tori to be from a woman's point of view. For each song she created an alternate persona, and went so far as to dress up as each persona for photographs. Aside from that, there are some very atmospheric and even creepy songs on this cd -- certainly the Eminem cover is one, and I Don't Like Monday has always been a creepy song.
Tori recieved a Grammy nomination in 2002 for her vocal performance on this song:
