At least 3 years ago when I was first discovering folk and Viking metal, one of the bands that I read about on Amazon.com that sounded interesting was the band Suidakra. However, the more I read about them, the more I became convinced that they weren't all that folk related -- more harsh/death metal with some folkish influences.
I've continued to come across the band's name. Recently I heard that they were joining the Paganfest tour that is coming through Seattle and Portland this May. I really like all of the other bands on that tour -- Eluvietie, Ensiferum, Tyr, and Turisas. So did Suidakra really have that much in common with them?
Yes, as it turns out. This is a band who throughout it's history has leaned heavily to the folk end of folk metal, and only on their last couple of cds have gotten heavier. Or so I read. Despite that, after sampling their current cd and then downloading some of it to my iPod to listen to, I've discovered that this band plays exactly the kind of folk-metal that I really enjoy. In fact, some of their songs are pure folk music, not metal at all. I don't know why I avoided them for as long as I did.
My favorite track right now is called Evoke the Demon but since that's not on Youtube I present for you:
Suidakra -- The IXth Legion
Suidakra -- Rise of Taliesin
Suidakra -- Highland Hills
