My dad just doesn't get it. Two new e-mails:
1. Less than a month after I tried to explain to him why his last virus warning was a hoax, I get a new one. This one was information that arrived, "just this morning, direct from both Microsoft and Norton." You have to send it to everyone you know immediately. It will destroy "EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC" and the person who sent it will get all of your passwords and personal information too, of course. No anti-virus software can stop it. Snopes has verified that it's true!
Bleah. Do I even need to check Snopes to see what they say about it? Of course not. I already know.
2. Less than a week (or so) after his message about MacDonald's dangerous and insidious practice of inclusiveness, he sends me a Non-Sequiter cartoon about remembering the Holocaust. It's accompanied by a nice message to never forget what Hitler did, but I can't help but laugh that with the message about "a land where your countrymen followed the voice of a political extremists who didn't like your religion", it somehow doesn't occur to my father (or the person originating the e-mail) that this could be easily applied to our current administration. In fact, the accompanying message not only warns against those who would persecute people because of their faith, but then explains that this is what Islamic extremists are up to (which is true, of course)... and then adds, "the rest of the Muslims who say or do nothing about them are as guilty as the extremist".
Okay, I understand the idea that Hitler was aided by all of the Germans who looked the other way and did nothing... but that sentence also comes very close in my mind to saying, "You should never persecute people because of their faith, and just so you know, ALL MUSLIMS ARE GUILTY OF PERSECUTING US!" Uh, yeah, you do realize what path you're walking down there, don't cha?
