Today's Song: Never There by CakeApparently I've never made Cake one of my songs of the day. That's surprising, since I like them quite a bit.
I remember the first time I really got to listen to Cake was on a trip to Vancouver, BC with
skyoxford and
jeffreycornish. This was around the time of their first single success with the song
The Distance, and although I didn't exactly fall in love with the band right then, it didn't take too much longer before I was hooked. Although the band has gone through a lot of changes since that point, their essential sound, made of weird lyrics and vocal style by singer/guitarist John McCrea and the lone trumpet of Vince DiFiore has always been there. According to WIkipedia, their "approach to arrangement, composition, and instrumentation has been compared to Soul Coughing, They Might Be Giants, Talking Heads, The Cars, Camper Van Beethoven and Lou Reed". That makes a certain amount of sense.
Never There is one of my favorite songs of theirs.
