Today's Song: En Natt I Nord by Midnattsol
While looking through a list of new metal cds that were recently added to eMusic for download, I made several happy discoveries.
First -- several bands I like quite a bit are available that weren't available before. These include Celtic folk-metal band Cruachan and Finnish folk-metal band Ensiferum (who were also just added to iTunes -- yay!) I did a song of the day for Ensiferum back on March 9th, even though they wren't available for download anywhere I knew of. Now they are!
Second -- I came across new releases by some bands I like that I hadn't realized had new stuff out. These include Unshine, Edenbridge, and Midnattsol. Unshine is a goth metal band. I own their debut cd, but I eventually decided that they were mostly mediocre. Now they have a second release out and it sounds like they've improved. Edenbridge is a band I like -- I have three of their cds -- and it sounds like they may have released their best cd yet, perhaps the one that helps elevate them out of obscurity (they really are a good band, but don't get the recognition that bands such as Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, and Lacuna Coil get).
Midnattsol is the Norwegian/German folk-metal band fronted by Carmen Elise Espenaes, younger sister of Liv Kristin of Leaves' Eyes. Their first cd was interesting but, like the Unshine debut, kind of left me unsure of how much I liked the band. Some songs were stunning, such as Tapt Av Håp, their cover of Solveig's Song from Grieg's Peer Gynt. Some of the other songs are likeable, but overall their claim to being Nordic folk metal is pretty weak -- compare them to a real Norse folk metal band like Lumsk and the differences are pretty stark. But they seemed like a nice folky goth metal band, so I was quite interested to know that they had just released their second cd. They, too, sound improved (warning, these are "no video" videos):
