Today's Song: Gravity's Gone by the Drive By Truckers
Yesterday Sky and I met up early and drove around, hitting Kinokuniya at Uwajamaya's and then Fry's. It turns out that Sky has recently been getting into alt-country, and of course most of the bands he likes are different from the ones I'm into, so we have quite a bit to share with each other.
The sad part is, I don't even remember the names of the bands he mentioned or played for me. Except for Frank Black of course.
Alt country related singers and groups that I listen to include: The Be-Good Tanyas, Cowboy Junkies, Calexico, Blood Oranges, Blue Mountain, Blue Rodeo,Dixie Chicks, The Duhks, Freakwater, Gillian Welch, The Meat Purveyors, Splitlip Rayfield, Hem, Lost Dogs, Lone Justice / Maria McKee, Neko Case, Old Crow Medicine Show, Old 97's, The Sadies, The Wailin' Jennies, Wilco, Whiskeytown, and of course, if you want to count Johnny Cash's American Recording records produced by Rick Rubin, I would. And let's not forget Uncle Tupelo, often credited for igniting the whole alt-country movement.
And that takes me through the entire list of alt country bands on Wikipedia and I still don't remember what bands Sky talked about. Doh! And quite a few of those bands listed above are really alt-bluegrass or folk and roots rock... all of those genres get blended in a little.
I played this song by Drive By Truckers for Sky, and it occurred to me that I haven't used it as a song of the day yet. So, here it is:
