May. 2nd, 2008 07:37 pmToday's walk was not as successful ad the previous two days. Oh, I got at least 40 minutes of exercise in and the weather was nice, but I didn't find any lost coins or spare change. I always look for that sort of thing, and most of the time I find it, so now it's not a successful walk unless I find something.
Three days ago I exercised for 25 minutes or so on the treadmill, and then set out around the apartment complex to finish my walking outside. It started raining almost immediately and quite hard so I only walked halfway around the apartments before cutting it short and heading back to my apartment. Still, even in the five minutes I spent walking outside, I found someting -- a wet penny.
Two days ago I found three pennys on my walk. That was a pretty successful walk.
Yesterday I found a dime. I'd stopped because some kid ran up to me babbling something, and I shut off my iPod and asked him to repeat it. He was looking for his dog, which was lost. I said that I hadn't seen any dog. I also noticed the dime in the gravel between me and him. A dime is a better find than a penny any day -- most people don't bother to pick up pennies, and many toss them on the ground, which is probably one reason I find them so easily. I waited several seconds to see if the kid would spot it and pick it up, or at least walk away so he wouldn't notice me picking it up, but he seemed content to stand there so I bent down and picked it up.
"Lucky," he said. And I thought, not quite. The reason I saw it was because I was looking.
I threw chili fixings into the crock pot last night and set my alarm clock back 10 minutes so I could wake up extra early. Naturally, I slept right through it and only woke up just in time to get into the shower on time. I was late leaving the apartment because of having to deal with a crock pot full of hot chili, and so I fiugured if I hit any lights on my commute or got stuck behind any slow cars, or didn't find a parking spot quickly and somewhere near the door, I was going to be quite late. Instead, I managed to have a clear path almost all the way to work, hit nearly every light, and found the closest parking spot to the door wide open. Perfect!
On my lunch I ate some chili and then went into the back room to see what else was available. Nobody had set anything up yet, save for some chips and cheese dip. I thought, good thing I made chili, there may not be a lot to eat for this potluck.
Five minutes later someone said they had the food set up. I went back to look. There was more food than I think we've ever had for any kind of work potluck -- salad with shrimp and avacado, two giant platters with six kinds of Mexican food on each (warm chips with salsa, sour cream, guacamole, cheese and black olives available, quesedillas, jalapeno poppers, taquitos, small sliced burritos, and small deep-fried burrito/taco things). There were hot wings. There were small flour tortillas with a huge platter of grated cheese, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and six pounds of ground beef spiced with taco seasonings. There was my huge crock pot of chili, of course, and cakes and brownies and several other dishes, lots of pop with ice, just more stuff than you could possibly take in.
Needless to say, even though people said all morning that my chili smelled wonderful, when lunch was over there was still plenty of it left. There was just far too much to eat. I came prepared, and filled three cheap sealable containers with chili and put them in the fridge -- lunch for three days next week -- and I still brought more chili home.
So far since coming home I've done my walk, watched the end of XxxHolic dvd vol 1, and listened to the rest of Interesting Times on my iPod (before I went walking, even). I'm still hoping to get a few more things accomplished tonight. ^_^
I have to say that, after listening to Eric and then Interesting Times back to back, I feel the need to read The Last Continent. I know it wasn't one of my favorite books, but those three plus The Last Hero constitute the very best of Rincewind's arc. I might even include Sourcery but it's been so very long since I read it that I only have a vague recollection that it was a pretty decent book. I guess mostly I'd just not include The Colour of Magic or The Light Fantastic, excpet that those do help quite a bit in preparing you for everything that happens in Intersting Times, which is probably my favorite Rincewind book. Well, after The Last Hero anyway. ^_^
As for books on cd... I have Lords and Ladies, Maskerade, and Witches Abroad waiting for me to listen to. I don't have Wyrd Sisters, which I've been told isn't very good on account of the person who reads it anyway, and as far as I know Carpe Jugulem isn't even available in audio format yet.
