Today's Song: Some Things You Can't Return by Dead Soul Tribe

I'm not sure where I came across Dead Soul Tribe, but I downloaded a couple of their songs from eMusic and put them on my iPod over a month ago. It's taken me a while to warm up to them, but I do like them quite a bit. This is a kind of atmospheric, gothic progressive metal that is quite beautiful. They hail from Austria, and according to Wikipedia, are "characterized by heavy usage of tribal rhythms, dark atmospherics and unusual time signatures." They also explain that band leader sometimes plays the flute, an instrument he picked up largely because of his love for Ian Anderson's work in Jethro Tull.

Actually the history of the band is interesting... band leader Devon Graves was in another progressive metal band called Psychotic Waltz, but he felt he was the "weakest link" in the band... so he quit and formed his own band, where he is principal songwriter, lead vocalist, guitarist and producer (and let's not forget the flute). If that's a weak link, you kind of wonder how good the other members of his previous band are. ^_^

This video is set to the bloody vampire anime series Hellsing... which works well for this kind of music, I think.
