Today's Song: Honeycomb by Frank BlackI downloaded this song largely because
skyoxford reccomended Frank Black's more recent solo work, which is pretty much all alt country. This is the former lead singer of the Pixies so his solo music is nothing like what he was making with that group when he was much younger. This song comes from a cd by the same name that he recorded in Nashville with some very talented session musicians. Apparently it divided a lot of critics... I've read everything from "just a curio", "underwhelming", "indulgent", "makes brilliant musicians appear barely competent", "inconsequential" and "comes off like something of a vanity project" all the way to "graceful", "One of his finest hours", "perhaps the greatest Frank Black LP (to date)" and "startlingly gorgeous."
After listening to the song
Honeycomb for a couple of weeks I was easily on the side of the latter reviewers, and now that I've heard the whole cd I agree even more. On Satuirday when
miertam and I had an hour to kill before our movie, we visited a record store across the street and I picked up the cd
Honeycomb used. So far I like it quite a bit.
No videos on youtube for this one. I'm not sure why, it's a great song... but there are very few videos of his at all on Youtube.
