My recent fling with power pop rock forced me to drag out all of my Smithereens cds and rip them so I could listen to them on my iPod. I love their early stuff -- just great, great pop rock that goes straight back to the Beatles. Unfortunately, as each new cd of theirs came out, it began to feel less like they were simply writing great pop music and more like they were desperately trying to write their next big hit. That's a subtle difference... but the songs felt a lot more artificial, forced, and consciously written to be big pop hits. The songs were boring. At least, it felt a bit like that on "!!" and completely like that on "Blow Up" so after that I think I picked up "A Date With the Smithereens" used/cheap but I pretty much stopped paying attention to the band by that point.
When they were good, though, as in this song, they were very, very good.
