Today's Song: Carry On, Wayward Son by Kansas
There were a lot of over-the-top progressive rock bands in the 70's, such as like Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, Rush, Queen, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, The Moody Blues. Most of them were British, but Kansas (as the name implies) were American. In some ways, Kansas is considered an inferior pgoressive rock band -- many of their compositions, which attempted to fuse rock and classical music, don't really work that well, and they weren't all top-notch musicians and composers like some of the other bands of the time -- but on the other hand, Kansas was hands-down the most commercially successful prog-rock band in the 70's. All of that success started with Carry On, Wayward Son, which is still a brilliant prog-rock song. I loved it the first time I heard it, and I still do all of these years later.
