Dec. 28th, 2008 10:54 pmSo I removed my hard drive and drove up to
miertam and
typographer's place. Miertam said that the best way to get rid of a virus like this was to do it from another computer. It's a SATA drive, so he had it hooked up through a USB port and I guess that wasn't ideal... it took AVG nearly 3 hours to run a scan, and it found nothing. Mike thinks that all that's on the drive at the moment is possibly some registry entries that know to go out to the web and download files again. Anyway, I've booted into safe mode and am running scans from there... then I'll need to make sure java is up to date, and maybe run more scans after. But it's late so I need to get to bed.
So... from safe mode I ran: Adaware full scan. Nothing found. Spybot Search & Destroy full scan. Nothing found.
They I ran a full scan with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, which I had downloaded just two days ago. Found: two registry keys that were infected!
That's what Miertam had said we were looking for. Hopefully that's all of them.
I seem to have the current version of Java installed. However, I had to open a browser to check... updates from OpenOffice failed. That's a slight worry. I think I'll run more scans before setting Spybot to immunize....
I uploaded Chapter 19 of Girl's School today. Since I haven't checked e-mail or gone back to fanfiction.net, I don't know what people are thinking about it... this was the big Kodachi fight.
Putting my hard drive back into the computer was fun... well, for an idiot like me. First I screwed it in and sealed the computer up... problem is, it wasn't plugged in. Then I had a heck of a time finding the power plug. I got really frustrated. I got out a cheap clip-on light to help me see... then when I got it all installed I sealed the computer up, sat down, and realized my clip on light was still inside the case. Doh!
My ex roommate Tom called me tonight for computer advice too. I'm like, are you sure you want my advice? Talk about the blind leading the blind!
