A word that I can't stand: squick. I just don't like the sound of the word. Maybe that's the point, but I still don't want to use it or encounter it in any way. I guess it's safe to say that the word itself squicks me. Not that I'd put it like that. ^_^
Squick, according to the Urban Dictionary:
1. Noun. The physical sense of repulsion upon encountering a concept or situation one finds disgusting.
2. Noun. A situation or concept which engenders this reaction.
3. Verb, transitive. To cause someone to have this reaction.
4. Verb, intransitive. To experience this reaction.
The concept of the "squick" differs from the concept of "disgust" in that "squick" refers purely to the physical sensation of repulsion, and does not imply a moral component.
Possible words that occurred to me today:
Schadenfreud: A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of Sigmund Freud.
Schadenfred: A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of Fred Flintstone (or anyone named Fred).
Schadenfloyd: A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of the band Pink Floyd. (Assuming they have any.)
Hot tip from my Bremerton terminal manager: shop at Goodwill in Gig Harbor. People in Gig Harbor are rich, and they frequently donate expensive stuff to Goodwill just because it's a year old and not the latest style. When I mentioned this to B, my coworker, she said, "Yes, of course. I used to work for Goodwill. Gig Harbor was one of my stores." I said, "You were a manager there?" She said, "Yes. I used to be in charge of sorting donations." I said, "Does that mean you got first choice of anything good that came in?" She said, "No. Not officially...."
So... Goodwill in Gig Harbor. Maybe that's where she got her 4 foot tall Santa that sings and dances. Because, you know, I'd hate to think she paid real money for that thing....
