Today's Song: Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire
I don't have any particular reason for picking this song, but it's been stuck in my head for the last day, and this is a nice video. I wanted to make it one of my songs of the day but I don't want to do that tomorrow. ^_^ I think I should use a much happier song for the day our next President is sworn in. (Although given the current economic situation I also need to use "Brother Can You Spare A Dime" at some point too.)
Barry McGuire himself was a Christian and a former member of the New Christy Minstrels, and allegedly was especially concerned about Communism when he wrote this song. But regardless of whether you buy into Barry McGuire's political or religious views, I think the song itself still rings true -- it's simply a song about everything that's wrong with the world. It doesn't offer solutions, but simply a warning that we had better find a solution soon. An optimist would say that there's a lot of good in the world too and we're hardly careening off a cliff (after all, this song is some 40 years old now, it hasn't happened yet), while a pessimist would say that there's a great deal still wrong with the world -- as this video, with a lot of modern footage in it, shows.
I've always liked this song. It's kind of the quintessential "The World Is Going To Hell" hippy protest song. But if you have a reason to hate it, then there's the very heavy-handed reply from the The Spokesmen, The Dawn of Correction. Personally speaking, The Spokesmen may have written some songs worth listening to but this isn't one of them.
