Apparently I don't change my userpics nearly as often as
So I had a gift card to Best Buy and after work today I drove up to the one in Federal Way to pick out a cd. I was surprised, because Best Buy does not have a sucky music selection like Fred Meyers or Walmart. Granted, it's still not all that great, but I saw stuff that you'd never find in a Walmart in a bazillion years.
The second cd I picked up is Ys by Joanna Newsom. It's hard to describe Joanna -- she's like Loreena McKennitt on drugs. At least, she has a weird imagination and a squeaky voice that some people can't stand (it is an acquired taste at least)... but she's a harpist who is partly stuck in the distant past, and partly stuck in the present day. That's the McKennitt connection. Newsom is cosmic poetry set to baroque music. Ys is a concept album with very long songs (there are only five tracks total) and includes production by Steve Albini, some lush string arrangements and final mixing by Jim O'Rourke, all of which adds up to an album unlike anything else out there.
TV on the Radio is a pretty experimental band too... so both of the cds I picked up are on the unusual/experimental side. ^_^
