I'm realling liking the Bluegrass collection. Much better than the two discs I bought the other day, which are aimed more at long-time bluegrass fans, I think. Y'know, all their favorite old songs, but new performances, by well-known musicians. The Time-Life collection is much more of a retrospective of the entire genre, a collection of the highlights and signature songs from the best-known or most important artists... it's a much more varied and interesting collection. Anyway, I like the older stuff much better, it has more soul.

One thing is, I've got a couple of versions now of Muleskinner Blues, and neither is the truly warped one I had as a kid. I had a record of novelty songs, including "Please Mr. Custer", "Hello Mudder, Hello Fadder", "May The Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose", "Flying Purple People Eater", "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight?", "Hot Rod Lincoln", "Camp Cucamonga", and I don't remember what else. It also had a warped version of Muleskinner Blues, which is a pretty odd song to begin with. I never liked it much as a kid, but now I wish I had a copy of that song. ^_^

Other things... orderd a couple of used cds last week, two of which have now arrived. One is by the Tossers, yet another drunken Irish pub folk rock band. They are about on par with the Dropkick Murphys, who are not as good as old Pogues, and not nearly as good as Flogging Molly.

However, the cd case it came in was melted (it was a cardboard case with a plastic tray inside... the tray is completely wasted), and the disc is scratched. I sent off an e-mail to the outfit I bought it from... I've bought from them before, and never had a problem.

The other cd that arrived is by a band called Dag. Or Dak. Or something like that, I forget. I read an interview online with Doug Pinnick of King's X, and they talked about bands that had asked him to leave King's X and join them (Deep Purple and Kansas), and the interviewer asked him if there was any band he would really leave King's X to join. And he said Dag. Or Dak, I forget. Anyway, they were a funk rock soul band that he loved, who are no longer together. I read a little more about them, then ordered 2 used cds for a few bucks each (one was 99 cents plus shipping and handling). After listening to them tonight, all I have to say is... hmm. This is not funk-rock like you get from Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Spin Doctors, or Primus, or Fishbone, or Faith No More, or whoever. This is more true funk, with rock/soul/gospel influences... very groovy though. All-Music Guide compares them to Brothers Johnson, and while comparisons rarely mean anything, it says something that they're compared to another funk group, rather than funk imitators. I think after a few more listens I'll be seriously hooked. ^_^

I need to stop buying music now and write some more.
