Today's Song: Pancho and Lefty by Steve Earle
The Amazon special on Tuesday was Townes by Steve Earle. This album is all covers of songs written by Townes van Zandt. I have to admit that I only know either artist by reputation, but they both have very big reputations. Townes van Zandt was considered one of the greatest country/folk musicians of his generation, and Steve Earle has kind of followed in his footsteps. Also, of course, he named his son Justin Townes Earle (Justin Townes van Zandt was van Zandt's full name) and the younger Earle is a musician in his own right.
After listening to the samples I decided it would be a great cd to download. I don't think it was a mistake, after all it was only $2.99. ^_^
Townes van Zandt is said to have influenced numerous other country, folk, and roots musicians, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, the Cowboy Junkies, Meat Puppets, Norah Jones, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, The Be Good Tanyas, Gillian Welch, My Morning Jacket, Bright Eyes, and the Dixie Chicks. Given all of that I probably should own some of his music, you think? ^_^
(Also it amuses me that the eMusic web page lists similar artists to van Zandt as "Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Willie Nelson". Yeah ok, we get it already!)
