Oct. 23rd, 2009 09:02 pmMission transform my computer room continues. Tonight I came home, checked Craig's List, and called on a guy who was selling three "Ikea" bookcases. He already had someone coming for two of them, but that was ok since it was unlikely I could fit more than one in my Cruiser (although in retrospect I could have crammed two of these in there.)
He said he would be home at 6:30 PM, but was going to go out at 7 PM. I left at 5 PM in case of bad traffic. He was up in Seattle, on a corner of land that jutted out into Lake Washington, North and East of the Arboretum, with 520 within sight of where he lived. There's really only one easy way to get there, and that's by driving the length of Madison. But if you do that, it's a straight shot from the freeway straight to where he lives (you have to drive 2 blocks North when Madison ends).
He told me he was in building D. I did not realize this meant an apartment. These were nice brick apartments. I got there about 6 PM. Another car followed me in. They seemed as lost as me. I wondered if they were the couple coming to buy the other two bookcases, but they were in a small car. They parked neear me, called someone on the phone, then met some guy outside the apartments and went in with him. I half wanted to ask if he was Jay, the guy I was looking for, but I didn't want to be annoying or rude. I should have asked though, because I had no other way of contacting the guy I was looking for or calling him, or even knowing what apartment door to knock on (there were small lobbies for every four apartments, with a number keyed door lock, so I didn't even know which apartment the couple had gone into).
I wanted to ask him when he came out, but only the couple came out. They drove off. I wandered around. There were two very nice decks on the river where you could sit and eat, with barbeques nearby. Seemed like a nice place to live. The management offices were closed, of course, and there was no intercom system. It got dark. Finally at 6:30 PM I got in my car and went looking for a phone, afraid that my trip up to Seattle was going to be for nothing. I stopped at a Starbuck's on Madison, and they let me use their phone to call the guy. I bought a Cucumber Dry Soda and a tunafish sandwich. Then I went and met him, and it turned out it WAS the guy I'd seen before. He said the wife of the couple that had looked at the other two bookcases was coming back to pick them up.
Anyway, the one I was buying had been in storage for 3 years, and didn't have any of the metal pegs to hold the shelves up. I happen to have a bunch of extra pegs so that didn't bother me, but I really should have asked if he'd take $25.00 instead of $30.00. He had them priced on Craig's List as 30.00 for one, 55.00 for two and 75.00 for all three... but mine was the only one that was missing something. But I didn't think to do that at the time.
Also, this is *NOT* an Ikea bookcase, if you ask me. The Ikea Billy bookcase is t all -- 78", and nearly 40" wide. This thing is more like 62" or 64" tall and maybe 35" wide. But other than that it works quite well. My pegs fit it, and it holds nearly all of the books from the two smaller 3-shelf bookcases that it replaced.
Now I just need one more tall bookcase, and I'll have greatly improved my computer room. ^_^
