I haven't bought much music lately, but Tuesday night I downloaded a new cd from Amazon for $5.99. I had to decide if I wanted just the download or the album, but instant gratification and the cheaper price won out. This is "HadesTown" by Anais Mitchell, a kind of folk-opera based on the Greek myth of Orpheus. I heard her interviewed on NPR and really liked it.
I set up a "Rock Opera" playlist on my Ipod. It includes "Jesus Christ Superstar: The Resurrection" (with the Indigo Girls), "Wicked", "Spamalot" and "The Hazards of Love" which is a rock opera that came out last year done by the Decemberists. That seems like more than enough for one playlist, although I was tempted to add Avenue Q, or maybe Hedwig & the Angry Inch.
Wednesday morning I considered downloading another cd, by Dangermouse and James Mercer (of the Shins), "Broken Bells". I love the Shins and knew I would like this, and I liked all the samples I heard. It was $4.99 on Amazon, but I wasn't sure about spending more money, or downloading it at work. So I waited until I got home... and by then, the price was $11.99.
Blah. Oh well, I'm sure I'm better off not spending the money.
