So. Another Norwescon came and went.

This time I wasn't sure I was even going to go. I knew I didn't have the money, but [livejournal.com profile] dolphinchatter and Juli had offered to let me stay in their room for free. I had thought that I had already paid for a membership since I do that every year, but then by Wednesday I was remembering that I might not have done this last year since they (no longer?) accept checks at the con, but would do so if I ordered from the web site. Or something like that.

Anyway I showed up not sure if I had a membership waiting... and I didn't. I figured I could hang out and ghost the con or maybe just hang out part of the weekend or something, but more friends ([livejournal.com profile] kehf and Ieva) bought a full membership for me.

I had fun. I usually don't see many panels... I sort of felt a need to see a few more to justify the cost of the badge that someone else bought me, but in the end the two writer's panels I tried to attend were too full, so I settled for about 2 panels a day on average. [livejournal.com profile] dolphinchatter and I saw a slide show by the artist guest of honor, which was very good, and [livejournal.com profile] eddvick and I attended a panel on nerdcore and chip-hop (and other "non-filk" geek music.) Fun stuff. I was sort of planning to avoid breakfast and dinner in the Hotel every night like we often do, but in any case friends kept buying me dinner (I did avoid breakfast until Sunday, I had bananas that I'd brought with me to eat in the mornings). So anyway... I have cool friends.

I also avoided our big end-of-the-con dinner but not really on purpose. People were standing around in the hall and I stepped into the bathroom for a moment, and when I came out everyone had disappeared. They'd been talking about the hotel bar again, but nobody was down there. I was a bit worried about paying for my parking first anyway, so I decided to skip it an head home. Come to think of it, the same sort of thing happened last year, too.

While I mostly tried to avoid spending money, I did pick up two books (again, really thanks to friends). I bought a Steampunk romance novel (really, called Steamed) and an overview of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series by Lawrence Watt-Evans. By the end of the Con [livejournal.com profile] typographer and [livejournal.com profile] dolphinchatter had bought copies of that book too (the title is "The Turtle Moves").

I also picked up a paperback by Thomas Burnett Swann, this one titled Moondust. I now have ten of his books, out of about 18 or 19. I had to make a list once I got home so I'd remember what I already had. (And while I'm at it I own Science of the Discworld I and II but not III. I couldn't remember.)

I also managed to write a Tai-Pan short short and plot another so I can feel like I didn't waste my whole weekend. I spent a lot of time at the con reading manga online too though. Half Prince was one, Hourou Musuko was another (which I'm still reading tonight).
