Today's Song: Dark Undercoat by Emily Jane White
I downloaded the song Dark Undercoat by Emily Jane White at least a year and a half ago, perhaps longer than that. It was at a time when I was getting into a lot of similar female singer-songwriters, looking for anyone who reminded me of Laura Veirs, Sam Phillips, or Gillian Welch. That was how I first came across artists like Mariee Sioux, Alela Diane, Deb Talan, Joanna Newsom, and Eilen Jewel. I've bought cds by all of them except Deb Talan, I guess.
There were other artists that I liked well enough, but never explored further, such as KT Tunstall, Patty Griffin, Vashti Bunyan, Brandi Carlile, Anna Ternheim, and Cortney Tidwell. Initially, Emily Jane White fell into that second category -- nice song, but not so memorable that I felt the need to check out more of her work.
Her song fell off of my playlist until I came across it again months later. It has a haunting melody that was far more memorable that I'd expected from my initial impression. I put it back on my iPod, and it continued to grow on me. Then I downloaded a second song, Hole In The Middle. This song has grown on me a great deal as well.
I've been meaning to pick up her cd for a while now, but she just came out with a new one last month, and I saw it used at Amazon for less than $6. So I ordered that today. ^_^
Her songs are dark and moody and understated. She has a wonderful voice, but does not overpower any of the songs. I think that's why it took so long for this song to grow on me, but when it finally did, it got stuck in my head and wouldn't leave.
