Song of the Day: Many Moons by Janelle Monae
I heard Janelle Monae interviewed on NPR yesterday. I'd never heard of her before, but already I can see that she's one of those truly original artists that will be blazing her own trail for many years to come. The NPR article says that she blend "James Brown, David Bowie, Nona Hendryx and Kraftwerk." She reminds me of Prince as well, another genre blender and bender, and Outkast of course (but she's worked with them so that's an obvious parallel).
Anyway, here you have a dynamic dancer and singer who mixes funk and dance and rock and electronica with science fiction themes. Her first EP was based on Metropolis, and her new full-length cd Archandroid is another concept album set in the same universe. And what a voice! To paraphrase one person's comments on NPR's pages, she sings about robots, rather than sounding like one.
