Nobody like da smelly Miko
May. 11th, 2003 01:42 amI don't know about anyone else, but I just about can't start my day without a shower. I remember when I was a little kid how I'd take a bath once or twice a week, and it just seems weird to me. I feel dirty if I go much more than 24 hours without washing up. I think I'd make a terrible pioneer, or survivalist, or POW.
But the thing is, when I don't have to work, I don't have to jump into the shower right away. I can goof off for a while. Combine this with the fact that I generally sleep until about noon anyway, and you can see that on some Saturdays and Sundays, it's practically evening before I actually get around to doing anything.
So sometimes if I'm too lazy I actually just get dressed and go do some shopping, and take a shower in the evening. I know, it's pretty damned shocking behavior. I try not to do it very often.
Today I wanted to run some errands. I managed to not run a lot of them, but as it got on into the afternoon I decided to do some errands without showering first. Ack! How embarassing!
And one of the things is, I've been thinking about watching what I eat and working out a little. Well, I've always thought it would be a good idea of course, but I've been thinking about it more lately. For one thing, several people at work are on some new special soup diet that they've been talking about (they're already getting sick of it). For another, I'd been feeling kinda fat... more than normal I mean. Maybe just my imagination, but several nights the last week I've had late-night dinners after I got home from work, at like 1 am or so (I normally go to bed at 4 am). My usual routine, not one I'd generally reccomend, but I rarely eat anything before I get to work, then I have a big dinner around 6 pm, and then I don't usually eat much else after I go home.
And for another thing, I have this bike that I bought last year that I rarely use that I want to use more this summer, and the weather has been nice.
So all of that was on my mind, and I'd decided to buy some vegetables and steam them, basically have a relatively healthy meal for once, and I also wanted to buy a bathroom scale... I've never owned one, so I've rarely weighed myself since I moved out on my own.
So I drove up to Sears and bought a cheap scale. Just the dial kind that tells you nothing else except that you're fat. All of the fancy body weight ones were $40 to $50, so I went for the $20 one.
(Shocking discovery: I don't really weigh any more than I did ten years ago. Of course, I was overweight ten years ago too.)
Then I went to QFC and bought a lot of vegetables and some other stuff. When I got home I set up the steamer with a few small (baby) potatos (yeah I know, but only a few), plus some carrots, celery, cauliflower, cabbage, and brocolli. After they steamed I put some fresh chopped cilantro and lemon juice on them, and some pepper. That wasn't so bad.
But in the middle of all of this Jeff called. He wanted to go bike riding. GREAT! Well, I mean, I'd been thinking about doing that, right? Except that I was in the middle of making dinner, and I hadn't taken a shower yet. That might sound stupid that I would want to take a shower before going on a bike ride and getting all sweaty, but I guess I'm weird.
So I wimped out on him. But actually that was cool too, because I had other things to do like dishes and laundry. But going biking would have been good for me. I should maybe do that tomorrow.
Anyway, many hours later I was clean again and dishes and laundry were done but I was kinda hungry, and not for more steamed veggies. Luckily I had planned for this. You see, before leaving I was watching this cooking show on PBS where they made nachos... they put chips, cheese, and jalapeno slices in the oven and made fresh salsa and guacamole to go with it. Not the healthiest food in the world, but it was meatless and sounded really good, so along with my veggies I'd bought a bunch of other stuff.
Chips: check. Cheese: check. Nacho Jalapenos: check.
I did the home made salsa first. They used a can of diced tomatos so I did too... the kind with jalapenos already in. I drained them and dumped them in a bowl, then added diced red onions, diced cilantro, diced jalapeno (half of a fresh one, with seeds removed), lime juice, fresh squeezed garlic (2 cloves) and I think that was everything. Salt. They stuck it in a food processor for a second or two on the show, but I just mixed it up. Yum! It turned out really good.
They'd talked about how much better fresh made salsa was than store-bought stuff. Well, there are a few brands of store-bought salsa that I don't mind so much, but they were right, fresh made is much better.
They also tested four store-bought guacamoles and hated them all. Well geez, I could have told you that. I can't stand store-bought guacamole. It all tastes like green glue paste.
So I made my own guacamole. I didn't follow the television instructions because I know how to make better guacamole than they do. I made a small batch, with two avacados mushed up, lime juice, red onion, the other half of my jalapeno diced, 3 more crushed garlic cloves, more diced cilantro, and then some sour cream and fresh diced tomatos. The things that I do different from them include sour cream (and usually some salsa too, but not this time) and the fact that they diced one of their two avacados to give it a chunkier texture (completely unneccessary if you ask me). I also added some chipolte tabasco sauce, because you need to spice it up in my book.
Then I pulled out the nachos, tossed on some chopped green onions (scallions), and glopped on at one end a bunch of salsa, a bunch of guacamole, and a small glop of sour cream.
YUM!
Like I said, not exactly healthy food, but compared to my usual weekend trick of ordering Sezchuan Spicy Chicken and Pork Fried Rice from Chef at Wok, I'm doing okay. ^_^
Spent a lot of last night and this morning researching more alternative country acts on the web. I've been bad, ordered several more cds, although a couple of them were only $4 each. What I really need is more Split Lip Rayfield, though, but there is no more. They just flat out rock, the fastest, coolest all-acoustic band ever.
