Second Niece (nine years old) loves stuffed animals. For Christmas I bought her a stuffed Totoro. It wasn't cheap -- I think about $25.00 for a relatively small stuffed toy (the larger ones were $50.00 and up to $75.00 if I remember correctly.) But it's Totoro. She barely recognized it for what it was. Meanwhile, First Niece (twelve years old) and Third Niece (five years old) both love the Totoro movie. Both begged me for one of their own, although really Third Niece is at that age where she'll beg for anything that pops into her head and not remember it later. Also, Second Niece and Third Niece are sisters, so if she really likes it that much I suspect she'd borrow the one her older sister now owns.

Sooo... I bought a Totoro for First Niece.

Typically I visit my parents at Christmas and then not again until July for 4th of July weekend, which happens to fall near my birthday, near my Nephew's birthday, and near Third Niece's birthday. First Niece and Second Niece have birthdays earlier in the Spring but I usually just buy them a present for when I come down in July. They know this, so first chance they got, they checked the spare bedroom and looked through my bags -- not that I really had the Totoro hidden, I hadn't planned ahead. Second Niece immediately assumes the present is for her, and for the rest of the day she keeps asking me when she gets her present. I told her repeatedly that I hadn't bought a present for her yet, but she didn't believe me because she'd seen it. Stuffed animals are for her, end of story.

It didn't help that we had a birthday party on Saturday for me and my Nephew. I hadn't realized it was going to be right after I got there -- but then, obviously you aren't going to plan a birthday party for the 4th, unless you count the big one with all the fireworks for the birth of the nation.

I finally had to tell her that I'd bought it for her cousin, First Niece. This did not shut her up at all, though. She wanted to know when we could give it to First Niece. "Can we give it to her now? Why not? I'm going to tell her about it if you don't give it to her now!" Nine year olds don't have any concept of patience when it comes to gift giving.

Ah, well. My Nephew wanted a specific cd by Serj Tankian (lead singer for System of a Down). I had a brief moment where I thought I might actually buy him a present instead of just giving him money, but alas, there aren't any real music stores in Longview, WA. There's Fred Meyers, there's Walmart, there's Target. None of them had it.

Sooo... money for Nephew, Totoro and an iTunes card for First Niece, cuddly stuffed Ty kitten and iTunes card for Second Niece (all she wanted was a stuffed animal, never mind that she owns dozens already), and for the littlest Third Niece, she wanted "Barbie dolls, Barbie clothes, Barbie shoes, Barbie dresses, Barbie babies and baby dolls." I've bought her baby dolls several times in the past, and I'm pretty certain there's never been such a thing as a "Barbie baby", so I got a "Barbie loves Buzz Lightyear" set -- Barbie in futuristic Jetson-like clothes with Buzz Lightyear printed in her dress and a Buzz Lightyear doll. I thought it was cute, and I know they just saw Toy Story 3.

In other news, some hiking shoes that I bought only four months ago have already fallen apart. :p
