Because I go off on weird tangents and obsess about them, after spending more than an hour looking at videos of songs from the 1980's last night, I spent most of today trying to work up a new playlist containing some of these songs. What I ultimately decided that I had to do was create a list of some of my favorite songs in order of when they were released. As I developed my list, I decided that they should all be popular songs or else songs that I liked a lot by big bands -- no one hit wonders (although I violated that rule once or twice). I could only do one song per band, so I had to pick their best song or a favorite song of theirs. I tried to hit all of the rock bands that I've really liked over the years -- bands that I own multiple cds of theirs.

But since I wasn't sure how far back to go or how far forward in time, I came to the conclusion that I had to start in 1964 with "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks, which has always seemed to me to be the starting point for all modern hard rock/punk rock/etc. Also that's the year after I was born, so it fits nicely in that way as well. And I tried to come up with one good song for each year up to 2010, but not more than two per year. I had to play around with the idea a bit to get all of that to work, but here's the results:
