Troublesome Chocolaty Goodness
May. 26th, 2003 11:08 pmWhat do you get when you put Ursei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Tenchu Muyou, Nuku Nuku, Project A-Ko, Yu-Gi-Oh, Card Captor Sakura, Magic User's Club, His and Her Circumstances, and several other high school series into a blender and hit frappe?
More on that in a moment.
Tom and I went up to Everett today to the Half Price bookstore there. He felt a need to buy some books, and along the way I picked up some anime. Then we drove down to Kinokuniya, because he wanted Chinese food and I wanted some Thai red curry, and it had to be cheap or near a cash machine, and I remembered their food court.
Things turned out well. I didn't see anything I needed to buy, but then relented at the last minute and picked up Crest of the Stars #3 dvd (I had just bought #1 at Half Price Books, and I have #2 already, picked up at the same Half Price Books about six months ago).
At the food court I was about to order a full order of red curry and a full order of phad thai noodles to go with it ($6.00 each) when I noticed that the line started to the left, and some people had moved ahead of me while I stood around contemplating what I wanted. I also realized that you could get a meal, which was rice, phad thai, an egg roll, and one or two entrees, for $4.95 and $5.95 respectively. I didn't really need two full orders of food so that seemed like a much better idea.
And then, just before I ordered, the woman changed the sign... apparently at an hour before closing they change to a new special, 2 entrees with the rice, phad thai, and egg roll for $3.89. Wow, can't beat that! ^_^
I got some chocolate truffles and a snapple and we headed back home.
We watched Crest of the Stars second, and Tom liked that series an awful lot. Before that, we watched the other anime I'd picked up at Half Price, "Trouble Chocolate dvd vol. 2". This is what you get when you mix all of those other series I mentioned together. Apparently this series started as a doujinshi, then became a radio play, and eventually a full-blown anime. It's certainly too wacky and over-the-top to not have been created by fans.
You have several weird aliens, including one strange four-eyed guy who teaches martial arts and is somewhat reminiscent of Happosai. The female lead is an indestructible over-powered tree spirit who will remind you at times of A-Ko or Nuku Nuku. She has one clueless paramour who is basically Mendou from Ursei Yatsura (he is filthy rich, commands an army, has a grandfather who runs a military conglomerate like the grandfather in Nuku Nuku, and always arrives in a hover jet plane), but he looks more like the secret agent from Tenchi Muyou In Love. Of course, the girl lead ignores him because she only has eyes for the male lead, who tries to ignore her.
The male lead, btw, is Cacao. He appears at first to be a normal boy, but his family runs a candy shop where you can buy chocolate bars that include magic cards that turn into monsters, which several characters are trying to collect... he doesn't realize this of course. And actually I don't know if it's his family that runs the shop or not, because it seems to be owned and run by some weird little alien. In any case, Cacao is a magic student with hidden powers, so he's more of a Tenchi type than an Atarou Morobishi.
The head of the magic department at school is a dead ringer for Lord Ilpalaso from Excel Saga or his twin, Kagato from Tenchi Muyou. The Principal is a bishonen vampire. Home Economics is taught by a female Frankenstein monster, who is in love with the vampire. The school is protected by a Power Rangers-like superhero team. The lead of this team, who has prom king written all over him, is a dashing, handsome Tatewaki Kuno-type (seriously, he even has the same English voice actor), only this guy has a prom queen to match. They both scheme against others in the school and whenever they are close, they embrace each other and share their fantasies about each other. (She schemes at all times to be the prettiest, brightest star in the school, which reminds me of Nanami from Revolutionary Girl Utena, and to a lesser extent, Yukino Miyazawa from His and Her Circumstances.
This is really just the tip of the iceberg for this series gone out of control. The pace of events and level of silliness is on a par with Project A-Ko, Ursei Yatsura, or perhaps even Dragon Half. Like I said, only a group of fans could have come up with such a bizaare series. The more I think about it, the more I realize I need to collect the rest of it. ^_^
