I know that this will come as quite a shock to everyone living here in the Northwest, but it's too damn hot!

I don't really have a right to complain because most of the country and the rest of the world has to deal with worse heat and humidity. But I'm gonna complain anyway. I leave for work every day around 2:45 pm and my car is too hot to touch anything, and there's no air conditioning, which is my fault of course but it still sucks. ^_^

I finished The Hobbit on cd. Thorin died a noble death, but otherwise spoke his lines woodenly. I didn't remember most of the ending of the book... from what I remembered, the dragon was killed and they all came home happy. There's a lot more that happens after the dragon bites it that I didn't recall, but I read this book in like 9th grade or something and haven't really read it since.

It was interesting to contrast it with some of Philip Jose Farmer's books. After the climax, there's a good deal of story left. Tolkien tells us about Bilbo's return journey, and his arrival at home, and how he lived a long time after, and how Gandalf and one of the dwarves came to visit again. I can name at least two Farmer books that end right at the climax -- Farmer rightly knows that that's where the main story ends. But it certainly doesn't hurt to know that they all got back safe, and their cousins didn't get to sell off everything in their house, and they got to meet again later and talk of old times. Farmer can be right and still be wrong about how to end a book.

I've been listening to my Feel So Bad cds lately, and ripping them to my hard drive. I've made a collection of all my favorite Connells songs, and another of all my favorite Sleater-Kinney songs, and another of all my favorite Lush songs, and now I need to do one of all my favorite Feel So Bad songs. I've been thinking that I need to bring a "best of" collection to give away at every writer's night.

I also got Ranma 1/2 season 3 and 4 on dvd, and I need to give away the first four seasons on vhs tape so that I have room for all my dvds.

From the "you just can't win" dept.: I'm juggling several things this morning as I'm trying to open my car door. (By "this morning" I mean 2:45 pm of course.) I have my courier bag filled with cds and my cd player slung over my shoulder, but I haven't pulled my hair back yet so some of it's caught under the strap which means the bag is slipping off my shoulder. (This happens to everyone yes?) So anyway, before I could get my car door unlocked, the bag slipped off the shoulder and dropped all the way down my arm, with the strap hitting my right hand and the bag hitting the ground at about the same time.

It fell on the ground again when I tried to toss it across the driver's seat onto the passenger seat. I managed to get everything in my hands piled into the passenger's seat and got settled behind the wheel (and tied my hair back because I don't want it blowing about while I'm driving 65 mph with the windows down), and then I noticed something. My hand was bleeding.

I guess the strap scraped off a couple layers of skin just below my 2nd knucled on my thumb. It didn't even hurt, although it didn't look pretty.

So anyway, I go to work. I work. I clock out, and head out to my car. Mindful of my struggles to get my bag full of cds into the car earlier in the day, I grabbed it with my right hand and swung it up high as I climbed into the car.

I have a lot of cds on my visor. They're mostly cheap cd-r's with stuff burned on them and so they have sharp edges. They used to face toward the passenger's side of the car, but I'd scraped my knuckles several times on them while hauling my cd bag (and/or whatever else) out of the car. Try as I might, I couldn't stop myself from swinging my hand up high and brushing the sharp edges of the cds. Finally, after taking a large divot out of one finger knuckle (that left a scar), I went to the trouble of turning my cd visor thingy around to face the other way.

So while getting into my car to drive home, I managed to scrape a big divot out of my thumb, just below the first knuckle. This one actually hurt. So basically, my thumb doesn't look too pretty at the moment. ^_^
