And now for a little rant.

I picked up a manga today called Pretty Face. I got volumes 1-3 and 5 (they didn't have #4). While I was at it I got #26 of Ah My Goddess (these are all Japanese volumes) and also got an anime dvd (English): Spirit of Wonder. This isn't the original one, but newer stories... maybe the ones that Sky has?

So anyway, I heard about this manga I got on a message board where kids were talking about "scanlations" or fan-produced translated manga scans... not just text translations but complete with the English (or whatever new language) words placed in the word balloons in scanned pages of the manga.

So I went looking... I found text English translations for most of volume 1. Then I found image scans for most of volumes 2-4. But it seems that these things are hard to find placed on the web where you can just download them... the preferred method is to exchange them over IRC. In fact many people seem to look down on anyone who doesn't do it this way or want to do it this way. It's kind of a geek club thing I guess... if you're not smart enough to get on IRC and download them that way, then you're not worth our time. Of course, hosting on a server is also expensive or lots more people would do that.

So I install IRC and the SysReset program that allows you to exchange files. It seems simple enough. It takes me a little bit to get the hang of things, but I find the right channel and figure out how to open an fserve window to download things. It's hard to find the right person who has what you want... and some things are hidden in layered directories... but I'm figuring most of it out.

The only problem is, everyone has their fserver or whatever set to kick you off after 3 minutes or 10 minutes at most or when you haven't typed anything in the last 30 seconds. You connect, find a file you want, try to download it, are told you're in a que, and then two minutes later your time is up and you're kicked off. I've been screwing around with this for several hours and I have yet to even START to download a file.

What a joke. If I wanted to waste my time I'd play Toontown or something.

*edit* Hmmm... Suddenly I'm getting the file I was trying to download. I guess I didn't have to keep my session open to remain on the download list. Okay, this makes a little more sense. ^_^
