Buying Ozzy Stuff
Feb. 10th, 2004 01:29 pmI've been in an Ozzy mood lately. I've read most of Eric Shanower's "The Salt Sorcorer of Oz" and I've started reading the Ruth Plimly Thompson books that I got last year. So far I've read "The Cowardly Lion of Oz" and am almost finished with "Grampa in Oz". I'm warming up to Ruth's style. Her books are more silly and contradictory than Baum's I think, but are full of inventive characters and silly jokes and puns. Quite entertaining for children's books.
I ordered two newer Oz books online, and then begain to look at where my collection of the "Original Fourty" is at. I now have the first fourteen Baum books and of the Thompson books I have 15-26 and 28-29 and 32. This means I'm missing just a few of hers... Ojo in Oz #27, Captain Salt in Oz #30, Handy Mandy in Oz #31, and Ozoplaning with the Wizard of Oz #33. Captain Salt in Oz is out of print but I ordered the other three, plus the two Thompson books that were published much later and are not considered part of the "Original Forty" put out by the original publisher.
So that will leave me with just Captain Salt in Oz to track down, and I'll have all of the Thompson books. As for the last seven "original forty" books, I have a couple of those already and the others are readily available. Just that one Thompson book is out of print right now... for some reason Del Ray published up to book 29, and most of the others through 40 have been published buy Dover or other publishers, but #30 is not in print and hasn't been for a while now.
Actually a lot of the other Del Ray Thompson books are out of print but still available for now. I got mine from The International Wizard of Oz Club which offers the first 9 of the Thompson books for only $60.00 plus $11.00 shipping and handling. Quite a deal considering these are mostly out of print. ^_^
I also searched on the web for a necklace pendant like my circular celtic cross but with the Oz symbol of a Z inside of an O. This is a very common symbol in the books and is always a part of Ozma's crown and worked into other details, but since you don't see it in the movie, finding it online was tricky. (It WAS used in "Return to Oz" which is a movie I've never seen but which incorporates a lot of the material from the 2nd and 3rd books). Anyway I managed to track down a web site of Oz jewelry that had several different Oz designs and they offer a nice silver necklace that's almost exactly what I was looking for. ^_^
