The End of Inu-Yasha?
Feb. 2nd, 2008 05:10 pmCall me slow. The animated series for Inu-Yasha ended in Japan on September 13, 2004, after six seasons and four movies. The last episodes came out in America on DVD as Inu-Yasha volume 55, containing episodes 164-167, several months ago now. I only just watched it today, and for a while I truly was convinced that they were going to end the series.
Alas, the crew has another confrontation with Naraku and he escapes -- and they survive. The end. There's a little tag saying, "But the story's not over! We're still chasing Naraku! Read the manga!" Bleah. I've actually been collecting the manga since inception, but I long ago stopped reading them because they paralleled the anime so closely. Now I guess I need to go back and read them to find out what (eventually) actually happens.
According to Wikipedia, the anime ended at the equivalent of the 36th manga volume, chapter 356. Currently in Japan they've published Chapter 530, and Rumiko Takehashi has announced that the manga is entering its final arc. (What? So soon?) Which means it'll be a few years yet before I find out how everything gets resolved.
Although it kinds sucks to just end in the middle of nowhere like that, it also means they could always pick up the story and finish it later. Aside from that, I always hate it when anime series come up with goofy endings to wrap up a story that isn't supposed to be wrapped up at that point. They did that with Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl for example, and with Negima!. Usually when they do that, it sucks.
